Overview

The Department of Anesthesiology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center has both the distinctions of being the first Beta test site and the only medical center in the metropolitan tri-state area to possess a human patient simulator. The Human Patient Simulator is a full-scale patient mannequin with palpable pulses, breath, and heart sounds that physiologically responds to more than 50 drugs through the interaction of sophisticated cardiovascular and pulmonary computer driven models.

Housed in a dedicated operating room with standard monitoring and anesthesia equipment, medical students and house staff use this latest technology in human simulation to discover and learn basic and advanced principles of physiology, pharmacology, and anesthesiology. The simulator environment is also used to teach and practice the management of complex perioperative medical events and emergencies.

Our faculty, with extensive experience in simulator teaching, is recognized as innovators and leaders in the field of simulator education and is involved in a variety of diverse simulator projects. We have invited guests to participate in simulation related events throughout the country and beyond, including Portland, New Orleans, Denver, New York, Acapulco, and Cerramar Beach. The faculty's simulator involvement has been highlighted on NY-ONE, a local news network, and on a NOVA special focusing on neurologic trauma.
