Patient Care

The School of Medicine shares a legacy of excellence with one of the oldest and most widely admired teaching hospitals in the United States: The Mount Sinai Hospital. Founded in 1852, The Mount Sinai Hospital is dedicated to the delivery of superb, compassionate patient care. Together, the Hospital and the School of Medicine are a preeminent academic health and science institution. This partnership has enabled the Medical School to bring the expertise of the Hospital's world-renowned medical staff into the classroom.

In addition to working with patients at The Mount Sinai Hospital, medical students have the opportunity to work in leading hospitals throughout the New York Metropolitan area. These affiliate institutions provide a range of educational and clinical experiences that allow our students to experience and contribute to medical care in a wide variety of settings and to work with a broad spectrum of patients.

Research

The School of Medicine's strength in and commitment to the basic sciences are manifold. A leader in competing for grant support and funding in an increasingly competitive environment, total research awards to Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 2007 totaled $275 million, and the School ranks 18th in the nation in NIH funding.

Interaction between clinicians and basic scientists facilitates the transfer of research achievements from the laboratory bench to the patient, and knowledge gained in working with patients back to the laboratory to find new answers. Physicians who are accustomed to collaborative work with basic scientists will best serve the practice of medicine today and in the future. Therefore, we have integrated the Graduate School of Biological Sciences with the School of Medicine to create seamless interactions between students and faculty in both schools.

Laboratory and clinical research in areas ranging from cancer, cardiovascular and genetic diseases to diabetes, aging and Alzheimer's disease continue to attract international attention. Students at Mount Sinai School of Medicine share this same spirit of inquiry. Eighty percent of our students engage in research, and 20% take a scholarly leave year. Many students have received prestigious awards for their work.

Community Service

Service to the community has been a core value of Mount Sinai since the founding of The Mount Sinai Hospital in 1852. Working with our neighbors to improving health care and education is considered part of our duty. MSSM faculty and students donate their time and expertise to hundreds of programs to support community efforts. Virtually every student at MSSM is involved in some form of community service from educating teens about the risk of smoking to acting as Lamaze coach for young women who would otherwise go through pregnancy alone, or creating new programs to satisfy unmet needs. We are especially proud of The East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership (EHHOP), which was developed by the students of Mount Sinai School of Medicine to create a health partnership between the East Harlem community and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and provides quality health care, regardless of ability to pay, to uninsured residents of East Harlem.

Mission Statement

Commitment to serving science and society through outstanding research, education, patient care and community service form the foundation that makes Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University one of the world's foremost centers for medical and scientific training. Our focus on developing new approaches to teaching, translating scientific discoveries into improvements in patient care, and identifying new means to enhance the health and educational opportunities of our neighbors shapes the educational experience of our students.

Along with The Mount Sinai Hospital, the School works to remain at the cutting-edge of modern science and medicine. Mount Sinai was the first U.S. medical school to establish an academic Department of Geriatrics, as well as divisions of environmental and occupational medicine (as part of the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine). Mount Sinai is also one of the few schools of medicine in the United States to have a Department of Health Policy, which focuses on outcome measures.

This same dedication to remaining at the forefront of contemporary science and medicine is reflected in the School's educational philosophy--the most important thing a medical or science student can learn is how to continue learning. In partnership with its academic affiliate, New York University, the largest private university in the United States, MSSM is a leader in the development of innovations in education.
