Clinical Pathology Laboratory
The clinical pathology laboratory, staffed by two full-time technicians, provides diagnostic and experimental support for the center and researchers. The primary laboratory islocated on the 26th floor of Annenberg, room 26-92. Laboratory support areas are two necropsy suites, room 26-93 and Icahn Medical Institute S1-27H. Laboratory equipment includes: Hematology Instrument - CDC Technology, Chemistry Analyzer - Symbiotics, Serology Instruments (automatic washer and ELISA reader) - Dynex. Bio-Plex zoo system Microscopes: individual (light, phase contrast, fluorescent, microphotography), double-headed with video color camera attached to a Sony video monitor. Ancillary equipment for bacteriology, histology Sekura Processor, Fisher embedding Center and Hacker Automatic Linear Stainer, and GeneAMP (Perkin Elmer) PCR equipment.
The Center has two necropsy rooms. Both rooms are well equipped (down draft tables, biosafety hood, dissecting tools, and photographic equipment). The Center also has a fully-equipped histopathology lab. Equipment includes an embedding station, tissue cutter, staining station, and microscopes. A projection lens adapted to one of the microscopes enables slides to be presented for pathology rounds on a video monitor.
Although the majority of diagnostics are performed in house, commercial labs are used for confirmation of positive serology results. Nonhuman primate virology is also performed by commercial labs. The following materials are sent to reference laboratories: simian serology panel, rodent MAP testing (IMPACT) for cell lines or tumors, endocrinology tests, and other special tests.
