a week, for four to six weeks
• Intermediate care:
Individual/family sessions as needed, and two extended groups per week,
for 12-15 weeks
• Continuing care:
Individual/family sessions as needed, plus one group per week to address
longer-term recovery issues
The program is open to people who are:
• 18 years old or older
• Struggling with alcohol or other drug problems
• Living in a location accessible to Mount Sinai
Individual Diagnosis and Treatment of Accompanying Disorders
Evaluation and treatment are also available for mental-health disorders
that may have contributed to, or been triggered by, the use of alcohol
and other drugs. Under the direction of our Medical Director, this facet
of the AOD Program combines group and individual cognitive-behavioral
treatment, along with medication management, when indicated.
Mental Wellness Group
The Mental Wellness Group is designed to provide skills training for managing
depression and substance-related mood dysregulation, while enhancing adaptive
functioning and emotional experience. Adapted for the treatment of dually
diagnosed individuals, this group draws from several sources, including
Cognitive Behavior Therapy models for treating depression, Jon Kabat-Zinn’s
(1990) Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Linehan’s
(1993) Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder.
The Mental Wellness curriculum, developed specifically for
the AOD program, trains participants in emotion management, distress tolerance,
and the use of “Mindfulness” to enhance positive emotional
experience. Participants in the group will include clients in early recovery
who suffer from disorders of mood and anxiety.
Cognitive-Behavioral Group and Individual Treatment
Cognitive-behavioral interventions, which have been proven to be highly
effective in several major clinical studies, are delivered by highly experienced
professionals within a supportive atmosphere. Our approach emphasizes
the establishment of strong therapist-patient alliances, collaboration
in treatment planning, and the promotion of personal responsibility for
change. In addition to intensive group interventions, weekly individual
treatment is provided to all clients.
Motivational Enhancement Interventions
Informed by the “Stages of Change” interventions and research
of Prochaska, Diclemente, and Miller, we offer interventions for dealing
with resistance to treatment. These approaches have been shown to be effective
in facilitating increased motivation for change. Our therapists have extensive
training and experience with motivational interviewing.
The Family Care Program
Recognizing that parents with substance abuse problems frequently need
assistance beyond our core addiction treatments, the AOD program provides
a comprehensive range of unique and targeted services in a variety of
areas, including:
• Parent and family assessment
• Parent-child relationship building
• Integrating family strengths with community resources

Kimberly
A. Hoppes, PsyD
Clinical Director of Mount Sinai's Outpatient Treatment Program for Alcohol
and Other Drugs (AOD)
Dr.
Hoppes, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Mount
Sinai, has overseen the development of all aspects of the clinical services
of the AOD Program since its inception in 1999. She assumed a critical
role in the development and application of two federally- funded grants
for providing evidence-based clinical protocols for addressing the specific
needs of parents affected by addiction. In
response to the specific challenges of dually diagnosed patients, she
developed the Mental Wellness Program, a unique adaptation of mindfulness-based
cognitive interventions for the treatment of co-existing addiction and
mental health disorders.
Prior to joining the faculty at Mount Sinai, Dr Hoppes was an Instructor
of Clinical Psychology and an Assistant Psychologist in the Department
of Psychiatry at Columbia University , College of Physicians and Surgeons.
At Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center she served as the Coordinator
of Chemical Dependency Occupational Health Services, an employee assistance
program for health care professionals and staff affected by substance
