The
Mount Sinai Breast Health Resource Program
provides individualized cancer support services within the context of
each person's life experience. Our programs are patient needs driven,
and our goal is to meet the shifting and critical needs of patients
throughout the continuum of the breast cancer experience. Patients coping
with a breast cancer diagnosis must gather treatment information, evaluate
treatment options and outcomes, and make life-altering decisions as
laypersons in a pressured and limited timeframe.

Thirty-two percent of women diagnosed with cancer in 2004 will
be diagnosed with breast cancer, making it the leading cancer
diagnosis in women. Fifteen percent of women (40,110 women) with
breast cancer will die of it in 2004. Lung cancer is the only
type of cancer with a greater mortality rate. In New York alone,
2,820 women will die of breast cancer this year, and 15,190 women
will be diagnosed with it. A woman’s lifetime probability
of getting breast cancer is 1 in 7.
