Head
and Neck Reconstruction
DEFINITION:
Numerous advances have been made in functional reconstruction
of the head and neck region through the transfer of various
tissue flaps. The focus in head and neck reconstruction has
changed dramatically through the application of microvascular
techniques that permit the transfer of tissues from different
parts of the body to the head and neck region. These tissues
may include skin, muscle, and bone either separately or in
concert, which permits a more sophisticated approach to restoring
defects caused by cancer surgery, trauma, or congenital problems.
The Department of Otolaryngology each year performs an average
of seventy microsurgical free-flap procedures exclusively
to the head and neck region. Dr. Urken himself has performed
over eight hundred microvascular free flaps exclusively to
the head and neck region. This volume ranks his among the
very highest level of experience of any reconstructive surgeon
in the world.
BENEFITS
There are dramatic benefits to Minimally Invasive Surgery.
The smaller incision minimizes tissue damage allowing for
a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery time. Patients
also enjoy reduced post-operative pain and less scarring than
open surgery.
