Thyroid
and Parathyroid Surgery
DEFINITION:
The presence of thyroid modules (tumors) is an extremely
common finding. The majority of these modules are
benign. An evaluation is required in order to try
to determine which modules are benign and which
are malignant. When detected at an early stage,
thyroid cancer is an extremely curable disease.
Prognosis for thyroid cancer is determined by a
number of factors, which include the size of the
tumor, the extension of tumor outside of the thyroid
gland, the spread of the cancer to distant sites,
the patient's age and gender and certain cellular
features detected under the microscope. The majority
of thyroid cancers are detected at an early stage,
and can be cured with a high degree of predictability.
TREATMENTS Endoscopic
thyroidectomy is an innovative technique for removing
the thyroid gland through extremely small incisions
using special instruments. This technique leads
to less postoperative pain, a quicker recovery,
and an excellent cosmetic result.
BENEFITS
here are dramatic benefits to Minimally Invasive
Surgery. The smaller incision minimizes tissue damage
allowing for a shorter hospital stay and faster
recovery time. Patients also enjoy reduced post-operative
pain and less scarring than open surgery.
