Mesothelioma

Definition: Malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura) or abdomen (the peritoneum). Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos.

Treatment: In addition to medical oncology treatment and chemotherapy options, there are new approaches for the treatment of patients with mesothelioma. These include a small catheter approach to improve quality of life for patients with malignant pleural effusions. Usually, no hospital stay is required.

Thymoma

Definition: Malignant thymoma is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the tissues of the thymus. The thymus is a small organ that lies under the breastbone. It makes white blood cells called lymphocytes, which travel through the body and fight infection. People with malignant thymoma often have other diseases of their immune system. The most common disease in people with thymoma is one in which the muscles are weak, called myasthenia gravis.

Treatments: Mount Sinai offers the expected broad range of radiation, chemotherapy, and surgical treatments to combat cancers in every stage. In addition to these more standard treatments, Mount Sinai offers minimally invasive lung cancer surgery. With faculty who have led national trials in VATS lobectomy, Mount Sinai is the leader in minimally invasive approaches in the New York tri-state area.

Cyberknife. Evidence of Mount Sinai's commitment to having the latest and best equipment available for the treatment of its patients, installation of the Cyberknife is expected shortly. Call to see if this latest innovation in stereotactic surgery is already available for clinical use.

Other lung conditions treated with minimally invasive techniques include: chest wall tumors, germ cell tumors, neurogenic tumors, cancer of the trachea mediastinal tumors and tumors metatstatic to the lung, including sarcomas.

BENEFITS Minimally invasive solutions are preferred whenever possible, allowing less tissue damage, faster recovery time, and less scarring than open surgery.
