HCOP (Health Careers Opportunities Program)

The Health Career Opportunities Program (HCOP) is committed to increasing the educational opportunities available to underrepresented minority (URM) and disadvantaged students in the field of medicine and health. HCOP was established at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in September 1999 with funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration. HCOP serves as a central network for pipeline programs and activities for intermediate, high school, undergraduate, and medical students in the metropolitan area. Working with several local area high schools and colleges, HCOP provides technical and financial assistance as well as counseling services to students interested in pursuing a career in medicine or health. Educational activities administered by HCOP include lectures on topics central to urban health, career seminars, education outreach to the students and teachers, and annual one-day symposiums.

HCOP’s goals are: to increase and ensure the enrollment of URMs into the medical and health fields through intense identification and recruitment efforts; to enrich the high school and collegiate student’s experience by engaging them in clinical research and community-based health care organizations; and to enhance their awareness in scientific exploration.

HCOP benefits students and a variety of institutions including local schools and community-based organizations. Key to the success of HCOP is the collaboration between the medical school staff from the local schools and colleges to plan programs based on the interest of the students.

CMCA also supports in other education pipelines through the Department of Medical Education and the Center of Excellence in Youth Education.
