Visiting Electives Program for Students Underrepresented in Medicine

Program Description

Electives are available for qualified third-year and fourth-year medical students underrepresented in medicine at The Mount Sinai Hospital and affiliates of Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM) Graduate Medical Education Consortium. This program is designed to increase diversity in the house staff and subsequently our faculty at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and affiliate institutions. This program subsidizes travel and housing costs for one month.

  • Third-year medical students are eligible for electives between March and June of their third year (if they have completed required core clerkships).
  • Fourth-year medical students are eligible for electives between July and February of their fourth year.

It should be emphasized that any student enrolled at an accredited medical school is eligible to take electives on a space-available basis at the School of Medicine and its affiliate institutions. For a complete listing of elective offerings please consult the Electives Program Course List at http://fusion.mssm.edu/students/courses/electives.cfm. Please do not contact the departments or the Office of Student Affairs to coordinate the desired elective.

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) definition of underrepresented in medicine is: "Underrepresented in medicine means those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population."

Application Process

The following must be included:

  • Application pdf
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Official medical school transcript
  • USMLE Step 1 score (Score Card)
  • Letter of recommendation from the Dean
  • Letter of recommendation from a faculty member at the students school in the department to which the student applying

On the application form, the student should rank his/her first three choices of electives and institution. Nearly all institutions offer General Medicine and Pediatrics senior electives. Family Practice electives are offered only at Jamaica Hospital.

Applications must be submitted by May 31 of the third year. All applications will be reviewed on a monthly basis.

The above material must be mailed, together with the completed application, from the Dean/Registrar's office. All incomplete applications will be returned.
