Visiting Electives Program for Students Underrepresented in Medicine

Program Description

Electives are available at The Mount Sinai Hospital and affiliates of Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM) Graduate Medical Education Consortium for qualified third-year and fourth-year medical students from groups historically underrepresented in medicine. For the purposes of this program, this is defined as Hispanic (Mexican, Chicano or Mainland Puerto), Other Hispanic (Cuban, Dominican, Other), Black/African-American (not of Hispanic origin), Native American, or Asian Pacific Islander. The program is designed to increase diversity in the house staff and subsequently our faculty at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and affiliate institutions.

Tuition is not charged for participants in the program, and subsidies for travel and housing costs for one month are available. These experiences are available to any student enrolled at an accredited medical school on a space-available basis between July and January. Students must have completed their required core clerkships before starting the program.

The program is limited to electives in the fields of Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery. A complete list of electives in these fields can be found on the Mount Sinai School of Medicine's Electives Program Course List, at http://fusion.mssm.edu/students/courses/electives.cfm. Please do not contact the departments or the Office of Student Affairs to coordinate the desired elective.
