Faculty Recruitment and Career DevelopmentFaculty Scholars ProgramOverviewThe Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs (CMCA) has provided structured faculty development opportunities for minority faculty since 2002. In 2006, CMCA became a founding member of the Northeast Consortium for Minority Faculty Development. The NCMFD is funded by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation and includes The Mount Sinai School of Medicine, The University of Pennslyvania School of Medicine, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ-NJMS). The NCMFD is charged wit the goal to increase the capacity of the participating schools of Medicine to attract and develop minority physicians and non-physician scientists for successful careers in academic medicine. The CMCA faculty development program is known as the Faculty Scholars Program which is designed to support junior minority physician and non-physician faculty members who demonstrate strong potential to become research scientists and to contribute to the recruitment of new underrepresented minority physicians and non-physicians. The Faculty Scholars are mentored by CMCA faculty and staff in the development of individualized research project plans, grant writing techniques, and educational programs. Program RequirementsContingent on funding, CMCA will provide salary support for the Faculty Scholars to ensure their focus on research and career development. Interested individuals must be a junior faculty member at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine or at one of the affiliate sites. Faculty Scholars are expected to develop an academic plan for upward mobility and advancement towards tenure in their department within seven years.
