OverviewHealth DisparitiesDespite a marked improvement in the overall health status of citizens of the United States, not all Americans have benefited equally from improvements in care. Racial and ethnic health disparities in death, disease, and disability still persist. While efforts to design and implement innovative solutions are underway to close the gap, strengthening the relationship among research, training, practice, and policy as an integrated approach is key to figuring out what works to improve the health and well-being of racial and ethnic minority groups. In eliminating health disparities, CMCA will play a role in facilitating the development of research and academic career pathways for medical students and faculty who are underrepresented in medicine and supporting the implementation of a coordinated agenda for minority health research and more appropriate health policy. Beyond the formal programs and services available through CMCA, it is important to acknowledge the work, service, and contribution of faculty members and medical students underrepresented in medicine and engaged in research affecting minority health and health outcomes disparities throughout The Mount Sinai Medical Center over the years.
