Hospital Medicine: At the Nexus of Care & Quality
October 16-17, 2008

Hospitals now recognize the key roles that hospitalists play in providing outstanding care directly to patients and in improving hospital systems to enhance patient safety. Many hospitalists are now in position to seize the opportunity to leverage their clinical skills and knowledge of hospital processes to improve the care of large numbers of hospitalized patients at their local institutions. Identifying areas that need improvement, working to find and implement solutions, and seeing the benefits realized in better and more efficient care is a certain formula for hospitalists to stay inspired, passionate, and productive. This program will provide clinicians the tools to achieve these goals.

This 1.5 day-long program will focus on developing clinical expertise to enhance direct delivery of care as well as developing skills in assessing errors and systems to be a force for improvement at participants' hospitals.

The program includes plenary lectures by outstanding physicians on diseases commonly seen by hospitalists, including syncope, CHF, and MRSA; and timely lectures on hot topics including rapid response teams and anticoagulation. The reviews will be presented in succinct lectures by top physicians aimed at elucidating the latest evidence-based approaches. Internationally known speakers will be present to lecture on key elements of evidence-based medicine (EBM), including essential tools to allow participants to integrate best evidence into their own practice.

Three series of workshops have been designed to provide participants with a choice of three "tracks" in which to gain further expertise: (1) clinical care, (2) quality and safety, and (3) evidence-based medicine. Participants can concentrate in one of these tracks or can mix and match areas to create an experience they feel will be most valuable and productive.
