2nd Phonosurgery & Phonotherapy: State of the Art
October 30-31, 2008
This is an interdisciplinary meeting of otolaryngologists and speech pathologists highlighting the state of the art in phonosurgery and phonotherapy. Within the last 5 years, there have been many new diagnostic and treatment procedures for patients with voice disorders. Diagnosis of voice disorders now involve a multi-disciplinary approach with many new treatment tools such as videostroboscopy, fiberoptic endoscopy, and sensory testing. The modules of the continuing education course are phonomicrosurgery, phonosurgery, office-based procedures, videostroboscopy, and voice therapy, with additional hands-on laboratories in phonomicrosurgery and phonosurgery.
Educational Goals and Learning Objectives
Following this conference, participants will:
- Apply videostroboscopy in the routine evaluation and management of patients with voice disorders.
- Describe the role of office injection laryngoplasty, office brush biopsy, office laser application, and office laryngeal electromyography in the management of patients with vocal fold paralysis, laryngeal dysplasia, laryngeal papilloma, and spasmodic dysphonia.
- Compare the different types of phono-microsurgical procedures and the rational for each in the management of benign and malignant lesions of the larynx. The phono-microsurgical procedures will include: CO2 laser transverse cordotomy, cordotomy and micro-flaps, and phonosurgery in professional singers.
- Demonstrate open laryngoplasty (medialization laryngoplasty and arytenoid adduction) in a cadaver animal model and perform phono-microsurgery procedures in the laboratory.
- Assess the value of objective voice measures and FEES in the management of patients with voice, speech and swallow disorders.
- Identify treatment options for paradoxical vocal fold dysfunction, vocal fold scar and hyperfunctional voice disorders.
- Integrate new multi-disciplinary knowledge with health care providers to optimize the medical, surgical and rehabilitation of voice disorders.

The Mount Sinai School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
