Medical Education
The Baruch/Mount
Sinai Program in Health Care Administration
Sponsored jointly by Bernard M. Baruch College of The City University
of New York and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, this program awards
the degree of Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) in Health Care
Administration. The program provides a link to the rest of the medical
center and fosters leadership careers in health administration.
Community Education
and Outreach
The School of Medicine supports a number of programs that provide
community work, education, and volunteer experience to medical students
and prepare high school and college students from urban communities for
careers in medicine and health. The Department is involved in all of these
activities.
Urban Health
Care Program
This is a medical student-led program that arranges summer and year-round
educational placements for medical students at East Harlem community health
and social service agencies.
SETH - Secondary
Education Through Health
This program is an educational enrichment program for New York City high
school students interested in medical and health careers. The program
offers classes in the summer and after school, with placements in laboratories
and clinical areas of Mount Sinai. Three of the nation’s top ten 1994
award winners in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search conducted their
projects through the SETH program.
Summer Programs
for High-School and College Students
In collaboration with the SETH Program, the Department sponsors summer
career development programs for young students. These include a blend
of practical laboratory work, special services, and field trips. Many students
from inner-city neighborhoods have been persuaded by this exposure
to pursue career in the health professions.
Education for
Practicing Physicians in Other Departments
The Department is deeply committed to the premise that all physicians
need to know the basics of community and environmental medicine. All physicians
should know how to take a proper history that seeks to identify societal,
environmental, social, and occupational causes of disease. To spread this
educational message, faculty of the Department sponsor numerous postgraduate
seminars for practicing physicians and other healthcare workers. Faculty
of the Department also teach extensively in the Departments of Medicine,
Pediatrics, Geriatrics and Adult Development, and Surgery.
