Divisions and Centers
Stephen Levin, M.D., Co-Director
Robin Herbert, M.D., Co-Director
This Occupational and Environmental Health Clinical Center is an internationally respected diagnostic referral center and an important interface between the research programs of the Division of Environmental Health Science and populations exposed to environmental hazards.
Mary Wolff, Ph.D., Director
The mission of the Division is to understand and prevent diseases that arise from environmental exposures with the goal of protecting the public’s health. The Division has a long and distinguished history of identifying and quantifying cancer risk, reproductive dysfunction, and neurological disease associated with exposures to toxic agents in the environment. Current directions in research include children’s environmental health, reproductive health, the human health effects of elemental lead and endocrine disruptors, and the molecular epidemiology of cancer.
Phillip J. Landrigan, M.D., Principal Investigator/Director
The CEH, established in 2007, is dedicated to protecting children against environmental threats to their health. This is accomplished by supporting initiatives in promising research areas, sustaining programs to educate the next generation of medical students and pediatricians about preventable environmental hazards, and communicating with families, policy makers, and the public through conferences and symposia.
National Children’s Study (NCS) Vanguard Center
Phillip J. Landrigan, M.D., Principal Investigator/Director
The NCS is a prospective epidemiological study that will follow 100,000 American children from conception to age 21. The goal is to elucidate the impact of environmental exposures on children’s health, development and risk of disease.
Phillip J. Landrigan, M.D., Principal Investigator/Director
The mission of the PEHSU is to provide clinical consultation and education to families, health care professionals, public health officials, and community organizations with concerns regarding pediatric environmental health.
James Godbold, Ph.D., Director
Members of the Division of Biostatistics collaborate with investigators from throughout the Medical Center in a variety of research studies. In their collaborative work, the biostatisticians apply and modify cutting-edge statistical methodology, and they develop new statistical methods for handling problems arising in biomedical studies. They also participate in the educational mission of the institution, serving as course directors for courses in the Graduate School and for courses in the Master of Public Health curriculum.
Division of International Health
Luz Claudio, Ph.D., Director
The mission of the Division of International Health is to support bi-directional collaboration between Mount Sinai scientists and physicians and their counterparts in countries outside the United States, especially those in Latin America. Also, the division aims to nurture minority students’ interests in science and medicine by enhancing their research capacity in a way that validates their unique cultural and linguistic abilities.
David A. Savitz, Ph.D., Director
The Division of Epidemiology supports the educational program of the School through courses in the MPH program, MSc in Clinical Research program, and teaching medical students. Research by Division faculty addresses the health of women and children, including studies of environmental agents, hormones, infection, genetics, and social factors, the role of community resources and work settings on diet, physical, activity, stress, and cardiovascular disease.
David A. Savitz, Ph.D., Director
The mission of the Center of Excellence for Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Disease Prevention is to increase the quantity and quality of epidemiologic research, and facilitate its integration with clinical research at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The scope of this work includes studies of the etiology of disease, addressing both genetic and environmental contributions, studies of the natural history of disease, outcomes research addressing the impact of therapy on the course of disease, clinical epidemiology to evaluate screening and diagnosis of disease, and community-based research addressing the effect of health services and public health policy on the health of populations.
Division of Family Medicine
Jenny Walker, M.D., Division Chief
The mission of Mount Sinai School of Medicine Division of Family Medicine is to provide outstanding educational programs in family medicine. The program also aims to provide clinical services to train health care professionals that promote the health of urban, medically underserved individuals and communities. The activities of the division will be informed by research relevant to the specialty of family medicine and the health of the communities that it serves.
Ray Cornbill, M.B.A., Director
The Division focuses on the theory and practical aspects of management applied to the health care system. The educational components center largely on the Baruch/Mount Sinai Graduate Program in Health Care Administration, which offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree earned over a three-year period in "executive style" format. The Division also coordinates the Mount Sinai School Of Medicine MD/MBA Dual Degree Program.
Division of Preventive Medicine
Elizabeth Garland, M.D., Director
The Division of Preventive Medicine’s mission is to prevent chronic and infectious disease and promote healthy lifestyles in the community that the Mount Sinai Medical Center serves. This is accomplished through undergraduate and graduate medical education, service oriented community projects and outreach and health services research.
Gary Rosenberg, Ph.D., Director
The mission of the Division of Social Work and Behavioral Science is to support the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine through innovative community service programs, creative research, and participation in medical student education.
