About the Program

Description

The Mount Sinai Environmental Medicine Internship Program for Minority Students enlists bright and motivated minority students to participate in exciting environmental and occupational health research projects alongside established scientists. Interns are also exposed to the many academic opportunities that exist at Mount Sinai. Seminars, clinical sessions, worksite visits, and classes complement individual research projects. Past seminar topics have included:

  • Environmental Causes of Breast Cancer
  • Statistical Analysis in Epidemiology
  • Occupational and Environmental Lung Disease
  • Occupational Environmental Patient History
  • Ergonomics
  • Children's Environmental Health
  • Children's Asthma
  • Reproductive Hazards
  • Industrial Hygiene

Interns are also exposed to talks on scientific paper writing, the peer review process, research funding and grants, and the ethical conduct of research.

The Program lasts between 10 to 12 full time weeks. Although most interns participate during the summer months, spots are available for those interested in participating during the fall and spring semesters.

Benefits

Applicants selected for the Program receive the following benefits:

  • Paid travel expenses to and from New York City
  • Housing in New York City for the duration of the Program
  • Full health coverage for the three months spent in the Program
  • Monthly stipend of approximately $1,700/month
  • Funds for materials
  • Academic credit is available
