Environmental and Occupational Health Summer ProgramEnvironmental and Occupational Health Summer Traineeships for First Year Medical StudentsEnvironmental and occupational medicine is the field of medicine that addresses health problems that derive from the exposure to harmful agents or factors in the general and workplace environments. The emphasis is on the prevention of illness based in the workplace or the environment. The Division of Environmental and Occupational Medicine of the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine of Mount Sinai School of Medicine offers NIH-funded summer traineeships to interested medical students to learn more about the field. Environmental Health Sciences Research TraineeshipThe student works on a research project under the supervision of experienced faculty in occupational and environmental medicine, epidemiology, or toxicology. Emphasis is on learning methods of research and understanding the context of the research. In the past, students have worked on projects including environmental determinants of breast cancer, Parkinson's disease, hypertension, onset of puberty; occupational lung disease, health effects from World Trade Center exposures, lead and mercury toxicity, to name a few. This program is funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The traineeships are available for periods of eight to ten weeks during June, July and August. A standard NIH stipend is provided. To apply, please complete and send the application as well as a brief statement of interest. A letter of recommendation is also suggested. The application deadline is February 29, 2008. Applicants will be notified by March 28, 2008, or sooner.
