How to Apply

The summer session will run from the last week of May through mid- August.

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

  • Minorities underrepresented in the sciences as per the following NIH definition:
    • African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, and rural Appalachians.
  • U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals or permanent residents
  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from B.A., B.S., M.A., M.P.H., or other Master's level programs and doctoral programs. A recent graduate is defined as one who has obtained their degree no earlier than May of last year.
  • This program is for students interested in the health sciences. Students in other fields will be considered if they are willing to apply their skills to the health sciences. For example, a math major may apply to participate in epidemiological or biostatistical aspects of research.
  • Available for a minimum of 10 weeks and a maximum of 12 weeks. Interns must commit to at least 10 full consecutive weeks to the Program. Other consecutive three-month periods can be arranged on an individual basis.
  • Available for and willing to write a research report and make an oral presentation of the research performed.

Although knowledge of Spanish and/or Portuguese is an asset, applicants are not required to have knowledge of either language.

Completed applications, along with their respective attachments, must be received by January 25, 2008. This deadline also applies to applicants interested in participating in the spring and fall. It is your responsibility to ensure that your application is complete. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Late applications will not be accepted.

Some applicants may be contacted and scheduled for a telephone interview.

Letters of recommendation must be signed and on letterhead. Letters of recommendation can be submitted via e-mail, regular mail, or fax. E-mailed letters must be signed and on letterhead and can be sent as Microsoft Word documents, JPEG, or PDF files to the e-mail address provided above.

Official school transcripts must be submitted via regular mail.

The Training Program's Steering Committee will review all applications and applicants will be notified of final decisions by April 1, 2008 via e-mail.

Important Dates

  • January 25, 2008 - Application Deadline. All materials must be received by this date. Late applications will not be accepted.
  • April 1, 2008 - E-mail notification of final decisions
