Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency Program

Educational Goals

Residents are exposed to a well-developed didactic curriculum within the period of the residency, and emphasis is also placed on the performance and practice of teaching, clinical and community service, administration, and research while occupying the role as resident. Residents complete competencies in occupational medicine and general preventive medicine as required by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education.

Within these general goals are specific educational goals:

  1. To enable the resident to acquire a working knowledge of the ability to apply the core areas of preventive medicine including epidemiology, biostatistics, health care organization and administration, environmental health, and behavioral sciences, in the identification and solution of health problems in occupational groups.
  2. To enhance the clinical knowledge of the resident in the care of individuals with occupational or environmental exposures and in the assessment of suitability for workplace employment.
  3. To develop the ability of the resident to conduct independent, meaningful research in the field of occupational medicine.
  4. To help the resident acquire and apply detailed knowledge and skills in toxicology, environmental monitoring, and safety evaluation as they apply to individuals and groups.
  5. To teach the resident about administration and policy-making in occupational medicine with respect to governmental regulation, law and workers’ compensation.
  6. To cultivate the residents as an effective educator in professional and non-professional contexts and with individual patients.
  7. To understand the roles and areas of expertise of other occupational health professionals and related parties in the “world of work” and to work collaboratively with these professionals.

The goals and objectives of our training program are consistent with the development of competencies as described by the ACOEM.
