Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency Program
Educational Goals
Residents are exposed to a well-developed didactic curriculum within the period of the
residency, and emphasis is also placed on the performance and practice
of teaching, clinical and community service, administration, and research while
occupying the role as resident. Residents complete competencies in occupational
medicine and general preventive medicine as required by the Accreditation Council
on Graduate Medical Education.
Within these general goals are specific educational goals:
- To enable the
resident to acquire a working knowledge of the ability to apply the core
areas of preventive medicine including epidemiology, biostatistics,
health care organization and administration, environmental health, and
behavioral sciences, in the identification and solution of health problems
in occupational
groups.
- To enhance the clinical knowledge of the resident in the care
of individuals with occupational or environmental exposures and in the
assessment of suitability
for workplace employment.
- To develop the ability of the resident to conduct
independent, meaningful research in the field of occupational medicine.
- To
help the resident acquire and apply detailed knowledge and skills in toxicology,
environmental monitoring, and safety evaluation as they apply to
individuals and groups.
- To teach the resident about administration and
policy-making in occupational medicine with respect to governmental regulation,
law and workers’ compensation.
- To cultivate the residents as an
effective educator in professional and non-professional contexts and
with individual patients.
- To understand the roles and areas of expertise
of other occupational health professionals and related parties in the “world
of work” and
to work collaboratively with these professionals.
The goals and objectives of our training program are consistent with the development of competencies as described by the ACOEM.
