The River ProjectThe River Project, founded in 1986, operates a private marine biology monitoring station at Pier 26, Manhattan. This nonprofit environmental science organization is dedicated to the protection and restoration of the Hudson River ecosystem through scientific research and hands-on educational programs. The River Project has also established an experimental facility at Pier 26 to restore an ecologically stressed habitat along the Manhattan shoreline. The River Project's Marine Biology Internship Program offers opportunities for high school and college level students to become directly involved in the study of urban wildlife and temporary habitat. This program also provides graduate students with an informed setting in which to pursue independent environmental science research projects. The founders of HSES recognized there would be numerous career opportunities in the environmental field in the twenty-first century, so they used college preparatory curriculum to develop a program that would become a national model for urban environmental education. HSES was not only created to help promote an environmentally conscious workforce and citizenry, but also to create an exemplary urban high school with a student body that reflected New York City's diversity.
