Welcome!
Welcome to the web site of the Bone Lead Measurement Laboratory at Mount Sinai.
At this site you will be able to learn about the technique of X-Ray Fluorescence, that we develop and
use to measure long-term lead stores in people; and about the environmental toxin lead.

Our Mission
Our goal is to learn about the associations between the amount of lead in our bodies and
the health effects of lead.

Profile
The Bone Lead X-Ray Fluorescence Laboratory (in the Department of
Community and Preventive Medicine at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New
York City) is one of the country's leading centers for a novel, relatively
new technique for measuring long-term lead exposure.
We are a research group that measures in vivo human bone lead
levels non-invasively with a technique called X-Ray Fluorescence that we
both develop and use.
Currently, we measure people who are volunteer subjects for over a
dozen federally funded research studies. We also measure many people who
are referred to us by physicians and by lawyers because they have symptoms
of lead toxicity or are concerned about lead exposure they may have
suffered in the past. The information obtained from bone lead measurements
can provide evidence of historical lead exposure, in the absence of
documented exposure.
