Major items of laboratory equipment include:

109Cd sealed sources freezer, -20oC, for storage of tissue samples
several 2000 mm2 intrinsic germanium semiconductor detectors & one 80 mm2 Si(Li) semiconductor detector, with supporting cryogenics for each detector
Digital Signal Analyzers High voltage supplies
NIM bins - three full size and two portable Gated Integrators
Spectroscopy amplifiers Multi-channel analyzer cards
Digital signal processors 100-MHz dual beam oscilloscopes
900 nS fixed conversion time analog-to-digital converters/multi-channel analyzer cards
Test pulser Ultrasound system with 10 MHz transducer

Computer facilities

The XRF laboratories have several desktop and notebook computers, a flat-bed scanner and a color printer.

There are several microcomputers with software capable of controlling the K XRF measurement systems, transferring the data from the Multi-Channel Analyzer of the K XRF systems and performing analyses of the spectra collected.

Data are stored and secured on the XRF group's primary domain controllers in a RAID (5) with daily digital backup. Access to both general and data areas of the server is restricted by passwords and administration rights. There is no guest access. The domain is administered by Dr. Todd. The XRF web site is hosted on Mount Sinai servers.

Statistical analysis is performed with programs written in-house and with licensed versions of statistical analysis programs (for which Mount Sinai levies an annual fee).

Communications facilities for interaction with other researchers are available via LAN.

Laboratory Space

The XRF Laboratories in the Department of Community Medicine of The Mount Sinai Medical Center are housed in two adjoining rooms occupying a total of approximately 800 square feet. An additional 140 square feet of office/laboratory space is also available.
