New Labs Open
There was a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the new Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory on the fifth floor of the Guggenheim Pavilion on May 2. The lab has one new electrophysiology lab and 20 new state-of-the-art recovery beds. Even as this project is completed, its next phase is already under way, with another new electrophysiology lab and a new pediatric cardiac catheterization lab to be completed midsummer. The combined 8,000-square-foot new space will increase Mount Sinai's capacity and help meet the growing demand for catheterization and electrophysiology services.

Mount Sinai and Cabrini Launch Cardiology Initiative
Mount Sinai and Cabrini Medical Center have begun a new cardiology initiative that is designed to bring Mount Sinai's world-class cardiac care to Cabrini patients. Facilitating the clinical collaboration is Michael Poon, M.D., who has been appointed Director of Cardiology at Cabrini, and continues to serve Mount Sinai as Associate Professor of Medicine/Cardiology and Director of both the Clinical Cardiac MR and CT Imaging Program and the Pulmonary Hypertension Program.
With access to state-of-the-art imaging techniques, as well as newly planned nuclear medicine and ultrasound equipment acquisitions, Cabrini clinicians will be able to accurately diagnose and treat many cardiac and pulmonary/diseases in a timely and efficient manner. Cabrini patients who are in need of more extensive cardiac services, such as cardiac catheterization or cardiothoracic surgery, will have access to Mount Sinai's specialty services in these areas.
"This relationship will extend the reach of Mount Sinai's expertise to the community served by Cabrini Medical Center" notes Robert Southwick, Director of Alliance Development. "These patients will benefit from receiving much of the their care in the local community, but having the reassurance that the expert care of Mount Sinai is readily available, whenever necessary."
Mount Sinai has committed to assist Dr. Poon in developing a high-level, comprehensive cardiology program at Cabrini that provides a full array of cardiological services to the local community, ranging from prevention and early diagnosis of coronary artery disease, to the use of drug-eluting stents or programmable devices, to clinical trials addressing the spectrum of cardiovascular diseases. The ongoing collaboration will include the development of clinical and research programs in advanced cardiac imaging, congestive heart failure, implantable-device therapy, and pulmonary hypertension.
Cabrini Medical Center, located on East 19th street, is a voluntary hospital sponsored by the Missionary Sister of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

New and Expanded Cardiac Services Improve Coverage and Care
Two important enhancements to Mount Sinai's cardiovascular services will improve both patient safety and the quality of care.
The first is the new 24/7 schedule of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, which used to close at 10pm on weekdays and offered only limited service on weekends. "We are very pleased to be able to extend our hours of operation", says Samin Sharma, M.D., Director of Interventional Cardiology and of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, and Associate Professor of Medicine. "Recently, numerous studies have proven that angioplasty is superior to giving clot-busting drugs (thrombolytic therapy) in the treatment of heart attack. Now, our services will be available for emergency interventions around the clock providing another state-of-the-art services all the time to our cardiac patients." The new schedule went into effect November 24.
The second enhancement is a new, five-bed, Emergency Department chest pain unit, due to open in mid-January 2004. Separate from, but adjacent to, the Emergency Department, the unit will function as a monitored care center for low-to-moderate-risk patients.
Also in January, work will begin on the planned expansions to the catheterization laboratory, a project that reflects the growing patient volume for Mount Sinai's cardiac catheterization services, which have earned the best safety record in the state. |
