Pediatric Dentistry Training Program
Curriculum
The pediatric dental didactic program is carried out within the Mount Sinai Medical Center. Students develop a sound basis in genetics, growth and development, behavior management, physical evaluation, dental rehabilitation in a hospital operating room setting, anesthesiology, conscious sedation, research methodology, statistics, interceptive orthodontics, laser dentistry and prevention, with a focus on dental care of children with physical, mental and emotional disorders. Students gain experience in performing operating room procedures with a team of pediatric specialists and anesthesiologists in treating children with medical disabilities and pathologies in the hospital environment.
Daily conferences given by the residents, faculty, and guest lecturers are devoted to case review and instruction in all facets of the pediatric dental specialty. In addition, oral surgery departmental grand rounds, literature review, and orthognathic/orthodontic and M/M conferences are conducted on a monthly basis. Students rotate through pediatric medicine, pediatric emergency medicine, and anesthesiology during the two-year residency.
In addition, each resident will be expected to prepare and submit papers suitable for presentation at a national meeting or publication in a peer-reviewed journal. These papers may be the result of clinical or laboratory research, including and not limited to projects related to trauma management, OR procedures, laser dentistry, and behavior assessment. Our residency program is designed to produce a clinically proficient and academically sound pediatric dentist. The program is part of a strong academic medical center that servers a large and diverse population of children.
