Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Program

The Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center sponsors a one-year fellowship training program for specialization in advanced heart failure. Successful completion of the training program prepares physicians for ABIM certification in Advanced Heart Failure. The fellowship is an integrated program providing specialized education in the pathophysiology and treatment of heart failure and in cardiac transplantation. Through the course of the year, the fellow will:

  • Provide inpatient care to patients with heart failure, including those who are supported with ventricular assist devices or who have received a cardiac transplant
  • Participate in all aspects of transplant care, including candidate selection, donor evaluation, post-operative and long-term care, including the management of post-transplant complications
  • Perform and interpret endomyocardial biopsies
  • Learn about the various approved and experimental ventricular assist devices
  • Provide outpatient care to heart failure patients
  • Perform interrogation of pacemakers and ICDs
  • Participate in clinical and translational research protocols
  • Lead weekly didactic sessions with the faculty, including journal club and interesting case discussions
