The Molecular Genetic Pathology fellowship program at Mount Sinai is a provisionally accredited fellowship program. It's primary goal is to train the fellow in the broad fields of molecular diagnostic pathology, including hematology, oncology, tumor cytogenetics, medical genetics, identity testing, and infectious disease. After completion of this program, the fellow will be eligible to take the Molecular Genetic Pathology board examination cosponsored by ABP and ABMG and have gained the fundamental skills and knowledge base necessary to direct a molecular diagnostic laboratory.

The program is co-sponsored by the Departments of Pathology and Human Genetics, but based primarily in the Department of Pathology.  More than 18 faculty members comprise the MGP program teaching staff who have been each selected based upon their specialized fields of expertise. The fellow rotates through various laboratories within the Departments of Pathology and Human Genetics. The rotation schedule is tailored to the needs of each individual fellow and his/her prior experience. A typical schedule includes several core rotations in Molecular Diagnostic Pathology (Hematology, Oncology and Infectious Diseases) (four-to-six months), Tumor Cytogenetics (one-to-two months), Medical Genetics (Clinical Genetics, Molecular Genetics, and Genetic Counseling) (three-to-five months), and Identity Testing-HLA Typing (one month).

In addition to clinical rotations, the fellow is expected to participate in the research projects or to develop his/her own research interest. The publication of an original manuscript(s), abstract(s), or presentation at a national and/or international meeting is strongly encouraged.

The duration of the fellowship program is one year with possible extension of an additional second research year.

The perspective applicant must hold M.D. or equivalent certificate and is board-certified or eligible in either anatomic or clinical pathology, or combination.
