The Mount Sinai Department of
Rehabilitation Medicine

The Mount Sinai Department of Rehabilitation Medicine ranks among the top 20 hospitals for rehabilitation medicine in U.S. News & World Report’s 2009-2010 list of “America’s Best Hospitals.”

In addition, our department is one of only 14 programs — and the only one in New York State — designated by the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) as a Model System of Care for Spinal Cord Injury. Our department is the only NIDRR-designated research and training center for traumatic brain injury intervention.

Our rehabilitation medicine specialists offers a wide range of comprehensive patient care services for individuals with spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and a variety of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and chronic conditions. We are accredited by CARF (the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) for our inpatient spinal cord and brain injury programs — the only such accredited programs at non-VA hospitals in New York City—as well as for our comprehensive rehabilitation medicine program.

Our department’s interdisciplinary team approach is pivotal to successful rehabilitation because we take advantage of each discipline’s expertise to provide high-quality, coordinated care. Our experienced professionals evaluate each patient and meet regularly to develop and implement individualized treatment plans in partnership with patients and their families. Our goal is to make each person with a disability maximally self-sufficient, mobile, and able to return to community life.

Kristjan T. Ragnarsson, MD, heads the rehabilitation medicine team. Dr. Ragnarsson's leadership and innovative approach to patient care has had a major impact in the field of rehabilitation medicine. The center includes physicians, primary rehabilitation nurses, nurse practitioners, and professional staff in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutrition, social work, psychology, therapeutic recreation, and vocational counseling.
