The curriculum at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine is designed to fully prepare students for practice in the 21st century. Not only do our students acquire the medical, scientific and clinical expertise needed for a successful career, but also the skills to work in interdisciplinary teams, the analytic tools needed for research, the confidence to critically evaluate and apply new information, an appreciation for the social, ethical and cultural aspects of health and the life-enriching skills they require to become self directed learners.
Highlights of our curriculum include:
- Active, small group and team-based learning opportunities that encourage collective problem-solving and peer teaching in Years 1 and 2.
- Course content that is thematically integrated with clinical learning experiences
- From Year 1, early and meaningful clinical exposure including partnering with patients to better understand their health care experiences
- Numerous opportunities for mentored basic, translational or clinical research with world class faculty and the ability to enroll in joint degree programs
- A strong emphasis on service learning and urban primary care through our student run free clinic for the East Harlem community
- Flexible scheduling during Years 3 and 4 including the option of adding a scholarly research year
- Exposure to pioneering clinical experiences such as home-based care, palliative care and an integrated longitudinal clerkship
- Use of state-of-the-art simulation and standardized patient experiences for feedback and assessment of learning
- Medical missions to raise awareness and address the health care needs of our global community
