Advisors
Mount Sinai student advisory services begin during orientation, at the beginning of the first semester, and continue throughout the four years of school. Orientation is designed to provide our students with an introduction to the school environment and give them both formal and informal opportunities to meet with members of the faculty, administration and student body. During orientation, the Student Orientation Committee also sponsors social events to acquaint the new students with both the medical school and each other.
All students are encouraged to communicate with faculty advisors whenever questions or problems arise. The Office for Student Affairs will help facilitate the availability of advisors to meet each student's needs. Mentors for research projects and community projects will enthusiastically support students. Students will have opportunities to develop close relationships with faculty during the first two years of their schooling. The Deans are available throughout the student's medical school career to discuss personal or academic issues with them. MSSM also has implemented strong support services for academic remediation, counseling and student health.
Career Counseling
Each of the clinical departments has designated a specific individual who will be available to give students specific advice regarding that discipline. Among other things, this individual can facilitate departmental letters of support for residency programs. The Department chairs support the residency application process and will be available to speak with individual students applying for residency in their discipline. All advisors and advisees are encouraged to develop meaningful relationships with each other, based on mutual respect.
Students are encouraged to meet with clinicians, scientists and teachers to discuss career opportunities. Career interest groups in family practice, geriatrics, internal medicine and pediatrics offer students a spectrum of role models to choose from. Mount Sinai's extensive electives program is designed to introduce students to physicians and surgeons practicing within a variety of settings. Each year, the Office for Student Affairs coordinates a series of Career Night Seminars for students. During these seminars, department chairs and residency program advisors acquaint students with the diverse career opportunities in their field. In the spring of each year, third-year students attend an all-day off-campus retreat. The purpose of this retreat is for the students to learn even more about possible career choices and residency opportunities. In addition a residency fair sponsored by a student group is held once every year. Different residency programs are invited to Mount Sinai and provide students with information about their particular educational curriculum.
