About Us
The Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine's Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency is a six year integrated program. Each candidate is interviewed by representatives of both the OMS Residency Program and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. On acceptance, the resident is expected to devote the next six years of his or her life to the task of successfully earning a medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine and an OMS certificate from The Mount Sinai Hospital. After receiving their medical degree and prior to completion of the residency program, the resident will be required to complete a year of general surgery enabling them to obtain a medical license. The residency program starts on July first and the resident will be salaried during the entire six years of the OMS residency program. The medical school component of the residency program begins the first day of year one of medical school and is completed at the end of the fourth year. Residents will pay the first three years of medical school tuition. To offset this payment, they will receive 50 percent of a (PGY 1) salary during years one, two, and three. During these three years, the resident will participate in the affairs of the OMS Residency Training Program, which include patient care, on-call, and didactics. This is done in conjunction with their primary obligations to their medical school studies, provided that the resident's performance in Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM) curriculum remains satisfactory. They will receive 100 percent of their PGY salary for years four, five, and six. During year four, the resident will be completing his or her medical school elective requirements on the OMS service. Though it is recognized that residents will have responsibilities to both MSSM and the OMS service, the Division Chief and/or Program Director, and the Chief Resident, all of the above understand the responsibilities and demands being placed on the junior residents, and efforts will be made to ensure that OMS assignments will permit the successful completion of Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Program at the Mount Sinai Medical Center /Mount Sinai School of Medicine seeks to provide the best possible training and education in the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with a commitment to academic excellence and the highest quality patient care. The training program aspires to have graduates who are enthusiastic about their career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and are committed to continued learning, as well as being highly skilled and compassionate caregivers. The program seeks to maintain faculty and affiliations that achieve the training program objectives and meet all accreditation standards for Advanced Specialty Education in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Evaluation and Advancement
Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM) utilizes the Honors, Pass or Fail system. Residents receive grades for each course taken and evaluations for clerkships. A copy of these grades and evaluations are kept with both the residency program files and the MSSM record. Receipt of the MD degree can occur only after a matriculant has met all of the academic, personal, and clinical requirements of both the OMS Residency Program and the School of Medicine. Withdrawal or termination from the OMS Residency Program will terminate admission/enrollment in the School of Medicine. Withdrawal or termination from the School of Medicine will also terminate participation in the OMS residency program. Residents will also be evaluated while on each rotation including Anesthesia, General Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition, semi-annual evaluations will be given by the residency program Director and the OMS faculty.
Advancement through the program is not automatic. Residents may only advance to the next level of responsibility once they have demonstrated the capacity to do so. Suitability for advancement will be assessed on a yearly basis for all trainees.
Educational Conferences
Residents are encouraged to attend educational conferences off campus provided that it does not interfere with institutional staffing requirements. The program will support residents who have presentations accepted at meetings. Time taken at meetings to present will not be recorded as vacation time. The program will provide an educational stipend of up to $500.00 to cover costs associated with meetings.
Licensure
In the State of New York, the OMS residents must obtain and maintain a limited dental permit to practice within the residency program. This will be managed by the residency director of the residency program and will be renewed on an annual basis. For residents that plan to obtain a New York State Dental License after completion of the program, the New York State Education Department must receive, directly from the residency program director, verification of completion of the residency program.
