We offer comprehensive training in dermatopathology to one candidate each year. Our fellowship is a two-year experience, with the first year as an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved year.
Training in diagnostic dermatopathology is founded on our volume of more than 50,000 accessions per year. We also provide about 5,000 consultations on previously prepared slides from throughout the United States and the world, which include a high proportion of complex material.
Curriculum
Our fellowship prepares you to enter a career in dermatopathology, either in an academic setting or in practice, with an academic orientation. You will be exposed to a range of experiences in the lab, while also learning in clinical and surgical settings, and actively participating in teaching.
You see and construct reports on a proportion of cases prior to being signed out by an attending and receive ancillary diagnostic training in immunoperoxidase techniques, immunofluorescence, and molecular diagnostics.
During the fellowship, you devote your first four months exclusively in dermatopathology, interspersed by an eight-month rotation in either clinical dermatology (for pathology-trained residents) or in surgical pathology (for dermatology-trained residents). At the same time, you continue with your dermatopathology training. We emphasize the correlation between dermatopathology and clinical information gathered by dermatologists.
Research
We encourage you to participate in and complete a research project during the program. We provide research opportunities including clinico-pathological studies, immunoperoxidase, and ultra-structural and molecular investigation of various aspects of skin disease, in collaboration with laboratories in the departments of Pathology and Dermatology. Special interests include molecular cytogenetics of melanoma, cutaneous lymphomas, soft tissue lesions, and inflammatory skin disease.
How to Apply
Fellows complete a four-year combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency or a three-year residency in pathology or dermatology prior to the program. Salaries are commensurate with your level of training.
