Stingers should be removed at the skin level with a blunt item. In the field, a fingernail, a credit card, or a blunt knife will suffice. The stingers should not be pinched. Initially, 10 to 50 mcg of venom is injected, representing less than 50% of the total venom sac contents, with the remainder being injected more slowly over 10 to 20 minutes. Therefore, removal should begin promptly (neck and face area first in the case of multiple stings) and carefully to avoid further introduction of venom into the patient.
