Expulsion of the conceptus does not occur for a prolonged period after embryonic death. Most patients will eventually abort spontaneously. However, many women prefer to have the pregnancy terminated. During the first trimester this can be done by suction curettage. In the second trimester, the uterus is emptied by dilation and evacuation or induction of labor with intravaginal PGE2 suppositories.
