CT, arthrography, and radionucleotide studies are still sometimes, but rarely, used. MRI has largely supplanted other imaging studies for evaluating intra-articular pathology. Arthroscopy is still the gold standard but most orthopaedists would obtain an MRI first to evaluate the extent of the pathology and to ensure that arthroscopy will be sufficient, as opposed to an open knee operation.
