Clinical Externship in Otolaryngology

Credit Hours: four weeks
The student will have:
- Individualized instruction in the examination of the ear, nose, pharynx, facial
skeleton, larynx, neck, and salivary glands
- Participation in the care of head and neck patients in the clinic, faculty practice,
operating room, and outpatient clinic
- The opportunity to participate in the full spectrum of otolaryngology surgery including
microvascular free tissue transfer, skull base surgery, otologic surgery, head and neck
surgery, rhinologic surgery and pediatric surgery
- The opportunity to perform admission history and physical examination on patients in
both the inpatient and the ambulatory setting
Electives
Students may take clinical electives during the third and fourth years
at either on-campus (The Mount Sinai Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital Center,
Bronx V.A. Hospital, and Queens General Hospital) or off-campus institutions.
Students from other institutions may not apply for clinical electives at Mount Sinai
and /or affiliates until after May 1 of the preceding academic year in order to allow
preferential registration for Mount Sinai students.
The elective week typically begins on Monday and ends on Friday. A total of 23 weeks of
elective credit must be recorded during the clinical years.
