Debra Fried, M.S., C.C.CAudiologist E-mail: debra.fried@mssm.edu |
BiographyDebra Fried received her undergraduate degree in Speech Pathology from SUNY Buffalo and her Masters degree in Audiology from Columbia University, Teachers College. She has worked in the Department of Otolaryngology/Division of Audiology at St. Louis University Hospital and at The Mount Sinai Hospital for the past 20 years as the Coordinator of the Audiology Center. Areas of Special InterestMs. Fried administers and interprets comprehensive audiologic evaluations for pediatric through geriatric populations. Through audiologic testing, she determines the extent or course of hearing loss and then if the hearing problem is medically or surgically treatable or if a patient is a candidate for rehabilitative services (e.g., hearing aid). If hearing loss can be corrected with a hearing aid, Ms. Fried performs hearing aid assessments and makes recommendations regarding the fitting and purchase of hearing devices. If hearing loss is not medically or surgically correctable, she counsels patients and family members regarding the impact on everyday life and the use of other assistive devices such as telephone amplifiers. In addition, she determines patient candidacy for a more specialized type of amplification device such as cochlear implants or bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA). Otoacoustic emission tests are administered to aid in the diagnosis of neurologic disorders and to aid in the assessment of hearing status when conventional audiology tests can not be administered. Teaching ActivitiesMs. Fried has co-authored a chapter on office-based pediatric audiology with Dr. Michael Rothschild, and has authored a teaching manual for all residents in the Departments of Otolaryngology, Pediatrics, and Occupational Medicine.
