(Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery)
Numerous advances have been made in functional reconstruction of the head and neck region through the transfer of various tissue flaps. The focus in head and neck reconstruction has changed dramatically through the application of microvascular techniques that permit the transfer of tissues from different parts of the body to the head and neck region. These tissues may include skin, muscle, and bone either separately or in concert, which permits a more sophisticated approach to restoring defects caused by cancer surgery, trauma, or congenital problems.
The Department of Otolaryngology each year performs an average of seventy microsurgical free-flap procedures exclusively to the head and neck region.
Dr. Genden have pioneered several advanced reconstructive techniques, including microvascular reconstruction of palatal and mid-face defects and recontruction of the pediatric upper and lower jaws.
