Chapter II: Academic Programs
JOINT DEGREE PROGRAMS
- M.D./Ph.D. Program
The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is an M.D./Ph.D.
program offered jointly by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine
and the Graduate School of Biological Sciences. The MSTP is
designed for students who are strongly motivated toward a
career in academic medicine with a major involvement in research.
MSTP graduates are singularly poised to work at the interface
between cutting-edge molecular, cellular, and computational
sciences and direct applications to human disease and health.
They are making important research contributions in a multitude
of basic and clinical science areas, working in academic medical
centers and research institutes throughout the country.
MSTP students typically begin their course of study in
the medical school, spending part of their first two years
in research rotations and special seminars that orient them
toward their Ph.D. preceptor and specialization. Students
generally enter the Ph.D. program in their third year; upon
completion of the Ph.D. portion of the program they return
to complete the medical school curriculum.
- Combined Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency and
Medical Doctorate Program
Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in cooperation with the Department
of Dentistry, sponsors a six-year combined Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery/Doctor of Medicine training program that is characterized
by a broad educational experience. Dental school graduates
apply for advanced standing in the second year of the School
of Medicine. At the completion of the residency, participants
will have completed all the requirements for board eligibility
to the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, received
an MD degree, and completed one year of general surgical training.
- Master of Science in Community Medicine
This program, designed for medical students, residents
and fellows, provides the necessary knowledge and skills to
function as specialist physicians in occupational medicine
and general preventive medicine. The curriculum emphasizes
aspects of behavioral science, epidemiology and biostatistics,
medical care organization and occupational and environmental
medicine. Undergraduate medical students may enroll in their
first year as joint M.D./M.Sc. students.
