EXECUTIVE FACULTY

The Executive Faculty, with the Dean as Chairperson, will: review all major policy and administrative issues proposed for the School of Medicine before presentation to the Board of Trustees; receive and act upon reports from the Faculty and Student Councils; appoint members to the Faculty Appointments and Promotions Committee; and review and either approve or disapprove all recommendations of the Appointments and Promotions Committee. Upon request, the Chairperson of the Appointments and Promotions Committee will provide the Executive Faculty with a concise statement of the basis for the recommendation of endorsement or non-endorsement of any appointment or promotion. All discussions related to Appointments and Promotions will be considered confidential.

The Executive Faculty will be composed of the Dean, thirteen Department Chairpersons and Center Directors and twelve non-chairperson faculty. The Chairpersons must include the Chairpersons of the Departments of Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Science and Psychiatry. The remaining eight Chairpersons will be elected by the Chairpersons and Center Directors: at least four must be Chairpersons of Basic Science Departments and at least one must be a Center Director. The faculty members must include the President, Vice-President and Secretary of the Faculty Council and nine tenured faculty, who are not chairpersons, appointed by the Dean. The faculty who are not chairpersons must be representative of the Basic Science and Clinical Science Departments. The elected Chairpersons and appointed faculty will serve a term of two years without limitation on the number of consecutive terms.

The meetings of the Executive Faculty will be open to all Department Chairpersons, Center Directors, Deans and designated academic representatives of those institutions having an academic affiliation with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The meetings will also be open to others upon invitation of the Dean. On those occasions when an agenda item is generated by the Student Council, the Dean may invite the President of the Student Council to the meeting of Executive Faculty. The Dean and the elected and appointed members of the Executive Faculty will each have one vote. Votes taken by the Executive Faculty will be by show of hands unless there is a request for a secret ballot.
