Chapter V: Faculty Appointments and Promotions and
Non-Faculty Titles
FULL-TIME FACULTY
The following academic appointments to the full-time faculty
of Mount Sinai School of Medicine are available to full-time
employees of Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
- Academic Track
The Academic Track is designed for faculty whose principal
activity is scholarship at the highest level based upon original
research related to basic investigations of normal biologic
processes or disease, clinical investigation, health services
research, public health or medical education.
It is expected that Academic Track faculty at each rank
will compare favorably with the foremost investigators in
their fields and will publish in peer-reviewed journals of
excellent quality. Evaluation of a candidate's publication record will extend beyond the first and last authorship positions and will include the candidate's significant contributions as a middle author. Faculty in this track should also contribute
as excellent teachers of medical and graduate students by
participating in the School's curricula and by mentoring students,
residents and fellows. Those who engage in clinical care must
be excellent physicians.
It is expected that as faculty advance in their academic careers, they will demonstrate increasing service and leadership in administrative and policy-making functions of the institution and the broader scientific and medical communities. Significant participation in and contributions to major institutional committees that are critical to the mission of the school and its affiliated hospitals (such as Institutional Review Board, Admissions Committee, Medical Board) will be given consideration when faculty are under review for promotion. Additionally, outstanding service in a significant administrative role (such as Vice-Chair, Training Program Director) will also be considered during promotion review.
Success in this track will be fostered through an earnest
effort by Chairs and senior faculty to guide each junior faculty
member, provide the opportunity for scholarly achievement,
and encourage choices that will enhance internal and external
recognition in his or her field.
Faculty in the Academic Track are expected to possess doctoral
degrees and to have completed their academic training.4

Qualifications: Appointment at this level may be
extended to individuals who have shown potential for academic
achievement based upon their training, publications, and possibly
entry level extramural funding.
Appointment and Term: Appointment and reappointment to this
position
will be at the discretion of the Department Chair5.
The term of appointment is one year.
Reappointment and Non-Reappointment: The Chair will provide notice of reappointment or non-reappointment.
In the event of non-reappointment, the Chair will provide written notice at least six months prior to the end of the faculty member's current term. If fewer than six months remain until the end of the faculty member's term, the term will be extended for a period of six months from the date of written notice of non-reappointment solely for the purpose of ensuring that adequate notice is provided.
In the event that no written notice of reappointment or non-reappointment is provided by the end of the term, the appointment will be extended six months beyond the original term end date, and the non-reappointment will be effective at the end of that extension.
If a decision to reappoint a faculty member is made during the term extension, notice must be in writing from the Chair. The reappointment will commence retroactive to the first day following completion of the original term of appointment.
If the Chair wishes to reappoint the individual, the maximum aggregate time at this rank will be three years.
Promotion: The Chair may, at any time during these
three years, promote the individual to the rank of Assistant
Professor in any track.
-

additional evidence of international stature.
Appointment and Term: Appointment and reappointment to this
position
are upon recommendation by the Department Chair, with subsequent
approval by the Committee on Appointments and Promotions.
For untenured Professors, the initial term of appointment
is five years.
Reappointment and Non-Reappointment: The Chair will provide notice of reappointment or non-reappointment.
In the event of non-reappointment, the Chair will provide written notice at least two years prior to the end of the faculty member's current term. If less than two years remain until the end of the faculty member's term, the term will be extended for a period of two years from the date of written notice of non-reappointment solely for the purpose of ensuring that adequate notice is provided.
In the event that no written notice of reappointment or non-reappointment is provided by the end of the term, the appointment will be extended two years beyond the original term end date, and the non-reappointment will be effective at the end of that extension.
If a decision to reappoint a faculty member is made during the term extension, notice must be in writing from the Chair. The reappointment will commence retroactive to the first day following completion of the original term of appointment.

- Clinician and/or Educator Track
The Clinician and/or Educator Track is designed for faculty
who spend a significant part of their professional activities
in clinical practice and/or education, and whose scholarship
is focused in these areas rather than in basic investigation.
While an excellent physician may be a significant generator
of clinical revenues, scholarship rather than income-earning
ability is of primary concern. A candidate for appointment
or promotion in this track will be evaluated by the aggregate
of his/her contributions as a clinician, scholar and teacher.
The relative contribution in each area for the successful
candidate may differ.
Although all faculty are expected to be competent as teachers,
excellence in educational activities may be considered as
a primary criterion for promotion in the Clinician and/or
Educator Track. Faculty from basic science departments whose
primary activity is teaching rather than research will be
eligible for appointment in this track.
Evaluation of a candidate's publication record will extend beyond the first and last authorship positions and will include the candidate's significant contributions as a middle author.
Faculty in the Clinician and/or Educator Track are expected
to possess doctoral degrees and to have completed their academic
training.8

extended to individuals who have demonstrated excellence in
clinical practice and/or education of medical and/or graduate
students and/or postdoctoral trainees, with potential to contribute
as scholars.
Appointment and Term: Appointment and reappointment to this
position
will be at the discretion of the Department Chair.9
There is no limit on the number of reappointments permitted. However, continued reappointment beyond three years in the aggregate must be justified by the Chair and approved by the Dean.

members of a research team or play a key role in supporting
the activities of multiple investigators or of a Shared Resource
Facility (SRF). Faculty in this track are not expected to
have independent research programs. Evaluation of a candidate's publication record will extend beyond the first and last authorship positions and will include the candidate's significant contributions as a middle author. Their funding will be
derived largely from external grant support.
Advancement within the Research Track requires increasing
evidence of scholarship, a defined, key role in the acquisition
of grant funding, and external recognition of expertise and
accomplishments.
Faculty in the Research Track are expected to possess doctoral
degrees and to have completed their academic training.11
