Handbook for Research
Section V: Research Training and Supervision
The term "trainee" will refer here to any beginner
in research. Whether or not these individuals have had prior
laboratory experience, their proficiency in the proper conduct
of research should not be taken for granted. It is important
to remember, for example, that many M.D.s and beginning students
have had little or no prior training. All new recruits should
receive detailed instruction in institutional standards for
the ethical conduct of biomedical research. Their activities
should then be closely monitored to allow early detection
of possible problems. The methods of training and supervision
necessarily vary with the nature of the discipline and field
of investigation. However, good research practices are generally
fostered by mentors who have frequent contact with their trainees
and create an atmosphere that encourages open discussion and
healthy scientific skepticism.
