Faculty Benefits and ServicesOther BenefitsLeaves of AbsenceMedical Leave of AbsenceMedical Leave of Absence (MLOA) is granted to eligible faculty who cannot report to work due to a non-job related illness/injury (including pregnancy-related disability) which extends beyond five consecutive days. Faculty are entitled to full pay for the period of time for which they have accumulated sick time, provided that a completed short term disability claim form (DB450) is submitted to Mount Sinai’s short term disability carrier within 20 business days of the onset of the illness/injury. Once the carrier approves the short-term disability, the faculty member will be entitled to be paid two days of sick time for each one day deducted from his or her “banked” sick days. Instructions for filing for short-term disability, as well as form DB450, are available at: Maternity LeaveMaternity leave often includes a period of time during which a faculty member is disabled as well as a period of time during which she is not disabled but chooses to remain away from work. During the period of time that a woman is certified as disabled by her attending physician, she is entitled to be paid for her accumulated sick time in accordance with the guidelines outlined under Medical Leave of Absence (see above, this page). Women who choose to stay at home with a newborn child after the attending physician certifies that she is no longer disabled may be eligible to utilize the provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act. During this period of time, the guidelines outlined under Personal Leave of Absence (see below, this page) will apply. NOTE: A woman who gives birth has an entitlement under the Family and Medical Leave Act which is limited to a total of 12 weeks (the combination of a disability leave of absence and a personal leave of absence). Personal (Non-Medical) LeaveIn the event that a situation arises which requires more time off than can reasonably be accommodated under existing vacation policies, a faculty member may request an unpaid leave of absence, or under certain circumstances, the individual may request a “Family and Medical Leave Act” leave. Approval of a request for an unpaid leave of absence will be made at the discretion of the Department Chair based upon a number of factors including the faculty member’s length of service, performance, the duration of the leave requested, the ability of the department/division to provide adequate coverage etc. Faculty will be required to use all available vacation time prior to an unpaid leave of absence.
