Computing ResourcesComputer hardware and software are an integral part of the advancement of scientific research. Computers provide the tools to store, manage, query, and analyze the resulting data of a study. The GCRC provides critical technical support to assist investigators in data organization, management and retrieval. Derek Treatman as the Informatics Core Manager makes recommendations regarding appropriate software for data management, collection and analysis. Consulting services are available to investigators to help them develop a data management strategy. Services involve assessing the specific factors of a study which include: the physical location of the data, data security and confidentiality, reporting requirements, multi-user/site access to the data, project management, application life cycle, ensuring data integrity, SDLC, backing up and archiving the data, etc. Investigators may also obtain assistance in the development of a clinical database customized to their study. In addition to data management, investigators may receive consulting on other ways to introduce technology into their study, such as data collection methods, data security, and using the Internet within their research. The Informatics Core Manager is also responsible for maintaining and enhancing the computing facilities of the GCRC. This duty includes ensuring a stable and secure computing environment and continuing to look for innovative ways to integrate technology in clinical research.
