Intensive Update with Board Review in Geriatric & Palliative Medicine
Sunday, October 4 – Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Objectives

The goal of the course is to impart to practicing physicians and other health care professionals a comprehensive and intensive clinically-based course in geriatric and palliative medicine providing updates on geriatric syndromes, palliative medicine, and the latest in research and treatments, in addition to providing a practical and systematic approach to the multidisciplinary management of debilitated, frail and seriously ill patients.

At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the latest evidence-based geriatric and palliative medicine.
  • Recognize the promises and pitfalls of new treatments for older adults.
  • Comprehend major geriatric syndromes and effectively manage these syndromes.
  • Apply knowledge learned to older adults across all sites of care.
  • Identify psychosocial and ethical issues as they pertain to older adults and formulate a treatment approach.
  • Be prepared for the ABIM geriatric and palliative medicine (2008) board exams.
  • Critically assess and guide medical interventions to improve a patient's quality of life.
  • Confidently assess and manage pain and non-pain symptoms.
  • Provide patient and families with the highest level of medical care that is consistent with their goals.
