Overview

Founded in 1982, the Department of Geriatrics and Adult Development at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM) was the only department of geriatrics in the country until 1997.

Our Department's strong involvement in rethinking medical education at Mount Sinai, including the debate over the structure and content for each of the 4 years, has resulted in Geriatrics being the only discipline to have designated mandatory clerkship time. Goals and learning objectives have been set as to what every graduating medical student, regardless of chosen specialty, should know about caring for older adults.

Rainier P. Soriano, M.D. is the Director of Medical Student Education in the Department of Geriatrics.
