  • Jersey City Medical Center Faculty Practice Plans, a network of physician provider practices offering general medical and specialty services.
  • Liberty HealthCare System Foundation, the philanthropic arm that raises funds to support Liberty HealthCare System's comprehensive array of programs and services.

Jersey City Medical Center is an urban full-service acute care major teaching facility in Jersey City. The Medical Center has traditionally assumed a leadership role as Hudson County's major provider of care to the medically indigent population of Jersey City.

The Medical Center provides a broad range of essential acute and ambulatory care services and programs. These programs include regional referral programs in perinatal care, child development, renal dialysis, and cardiac catheterization. The Medical Center is also the regional Perinatal Center for prenatal and neonatal care for high-risk mothers and infants as well as one of New Jersey's nine Level II Trauma Centers. The Medical Center's Emergency Medical Services Department provides Advanced Life Support for Hudson County and Basic Life Support for Jersey City and Secaucus.

The highly urban catchment area of Hudson County is ethnically diverse, and the majority of those served are from economically disadvantaged and underserved groups. To illustrate the needs of Jersey City and its surrounding areas, the following demographic factors and health indicators characterize this community:

  • a substantial minority population, many of whom reside below the poverty level
  • a high percentage of women in their reproductive years
  • a large number of families with children living in poverty
  • a disproportionate number of substance abusers, which has increased the number of individuals at risk for HIV infection

In 1997 there were 18,128 total admissions to the Hospital. Its most active departments include Medicine (4,988 admissions), Obstetrics/Gynecology (3,335 admissions and 2,170 newborns) and Pediatrics (2,488 admissions). During 1997, the Medical Center had 49,049 Emergency Department visits and 114,343 ambulatory visits, of which 4,192 were visits to pediatric primary and specialty clinics at Jersey City Medical Center. The majority of the Medical Center's admissions originate from the Emergency Department and other outpatient services.
