North General Hospital

1879 Madison Avenue
New York, NY 10035

North General Hospital has been historically recognized as the only nonprofit community teaching hospital in Central and East Harlem.

These communities have been federally designated health manpower shortage areas. Our mission is to provide medical care of the highest quality to a largely African-American and Latino patient population.

Virtually every major international ethnic group has roots and history in Harlem. On any given day there are over 80 different languages and hundreds of dialects spoken in the Harlem Community. Harlem is a community that maintains an open arms policy to those who wish to add to the cultural greatness of its international heritage.

Harlem is the only community in America where you can visit the world by walking a few blocks. Harlem has 16 major museums and the largest number of historical districts and landmarks of any other community in America. It has 17 institutions of higher education ranging from science to law, music to religion, and more.

North General Hospital, a 200-bed community hospital, has historically structured services in response to the needs of the Central and East Harlem community in which it is located. North General is accredited with commendation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO). The Hospital operates two approved residency programs in Primary Care Internal Medicine and Psychiatry.

The residency programs in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry were established in 1966 and 1997 respectively. We are committed to providing quality training that prepares residents to practice in any community across the country. There are four PGY-I positions in our four-year categorical general Psychiatry Program and ten PGY-I positions in our three-year categorical Primary Care Internal Medicine Program.
