Internal Medicine Residency Training Program
FAQ
These are the most frequently
asked questions regarding our Internal Medicine Residency Training Program.
- USMLE scores in the mid 80's [first attempt]. USMLE scores accepted for interviews last year were in the
upper 80's for both parts 1 and 2 for categorical positions and average USMLE scores of 80 and above for preliminary positions.
- If you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, we will accept J-1 visa or employment authorizaton only. [may be subject to change]
- Please check via ERAS to know whether your application is complete.
- We do not mail our brochure, you can view it on our Web site mssm.edu/gme/hospitals/queens_internalmed.shtml.
- Application deadline is the first 1,000 applicants or October 30, which ever comes first. It is helpful
if we receive your complete application package by November 1 because it gives the committee ample time to review your applications.
- U.S. clinical experience though not required is helpful [observerships do not count as clinical experience].

- In order to apply you must submit:
- Dean's letter
- Department of Medicine Letter
- Three additional letters of recommendation from an Attending who
directly supervised you [preferably within six months].
- Medical school transcript
- USMLE score reports or COMLEX score reports
- We prefer candidates who graduated medical school within the last five years.
- We offer six preliminary and 15 categorical positions.
- We have a large percent of International Medical Graduates in our program.
- Our interview session starts mid November and ends third week of January. Interviews are held Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday only. No interviews will be scheduled on the following holidays – Thanksgiving and the day after, Christmas
week through January 1, and Martin Luther King's birthday.
- Queens Hospital Center is a community based hospital with university
sponsorship of Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
- A committee reviews the applications to determine if an interview
will be granted. Due to the volume of applications received we will
not be able to interview all applicants. Approximately 10 percent of applications received will be selected for interview.
- We will only review applications submitted via ERAS.

- Pre-match positions are offered occasionally.
- For international medical graduates, ECFMG certification is not required prior to interview both Steps
1 and 2 are required. Requirements for certification must be obtained by mid March.
- We do not offer an observership program.
