Overview Offices Policies Forms EPA Training Resources Announcements

Overview

Mount Sinai School of Medicine Health and Safety Web site has been developed to provide Principal Investigators and their staff with health and safety information pertinent to performing their research in a safe manner. The information presented here is also applicable for all medical students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting scientists conducting research at MSSM.

Over the past several years, government agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have taken a keen interest in the day-to-day activities occurring in the research lab. While OSHA looks at the health impacts of substances such as chemicals, human-source specimens, and biological agents that workers may encounter in their research activities, the US EPA looks at the health impacts that the School's research activities have on the surrounding community, and the overall environment at large.

In order to facilitate the efforts of Mount Sinai School of Medicine to comply with all federal, state, and local safety and health laws, and to assist all Faculty and staff in understanding and using safe practices in their research activities, the Offices and individuals charged with overseeing specific health and safety activities are presented on this site.

Additional information is provided to assist all Faculty and staff in the event of an accident, spill, or exposure incident. Who to call and where to go is vital in many situations.

Links to government agencies having jurisdiction over specific health and safety issues are also provided so that the "black-letter-of-the-law" can be reviewed regarding your specific activities.

If you need additional assistance, phone numbers and, in some cases, e-mail addresses are provided for you. If you are not sure about a practice or research activity, ask for assistance.
